Salisbury, NC (March 3, 2016) –The Rowan County Health Department Smile Center received a $1,000 Smiles for Kids grant from the Delta Dental Foundation that will help fund the salary, supplies, and travel expenses of a dental hygienist who will go into the school system and screen children for dental decay.
The purpose of this project, which is a collaboration with Rowan Salisbury School System, is to expand dental screenings for students in need at all grade levels in Rowan County.
“We are looking forward to this dental project and feel fortunate that we have strong partnerships in place with the Rowan-Salisbury School System and Debbye Krueger, State Dental Hygienist,” said Nina Oliver, Public Health Director. “We are committed to providing access to dental care for all Rowan County children, and we thank Delta Dental for assisting us with this mission.”
The Delta Dental Foundation focuses on ensuring children and adults in North Carolina receive high-quality oral health education and dental care. The Rowan County Health Department Smile Center grant is one of 17 grants totaling $40,000 awarded to North Carolina nonprofits providing oral health programs. Grant recipients were selected based on criteria that included the number of at-risk children served, the uniqueness of the program, the level of community involvement in the program and the ability to measure results.
“The Delta Dental Foundation is proud to support the work being done by the Rowan County Health Department Smile Center,” Delta Dental of North Carolina CEO Curtis Ladig said. “Twenty-one percent of children entering kindergarten in Rowan County have tooth decay, 60% more than the state average.  By increasing access to dental screenings and care, we can help improve the oral and overall health and well-being of children by preventing serious health issues down the road.”
