Charlotte, N.C. – March 21, 2016 North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall spoke at Delta Dental of North Carolina’s (DDNC) second Women in Leadership Profile Series Luncheon. DDNC hosts these luncheons to celebrate women whose leadership is paving the way for the future, while providing an exciting networking opportunity for local professionals.

The secretary addressed 75 attendees at Foundation for the Carolinas in Charlotte, N.C. She shared what it was like to come of age in a rural area with few expectations for women’s education or careers and her law school experience as both a woman and older student. She described campaigning for positions in the N.C. General Assembly, including running against race car driver Richard Petty, and, eventually, Secretary of State.

“There is no straight path to leadership,” said Secretary Marshall. “It is important that women remember to support each other’s growth and find ways to partner, not compete, with one another. This is the best way to ensure that women leaders rise to their full potential in their professional endeavors.”

"At Delta Dental of North Carolina, we value leadership development and giving back to our community,” CEO of Delta Dental of North Carolina, Curt Ladig, said. “Our Women in Leadership Profiles Series grew out of these values. We’re glad to offer this opportunity for women, especially, to gather, network and hear the leadership journeys of women like Secretary Marshall.”

During the event, DDNC presented two donations in the secretary’s honor: a classroom oral health education kit given to Reid Park Academy, a Title 1 public school, and $1,000 to the Dental Foundation of North Carolina’s Maldova Project. In addition, $1,000 was donated to Junior League of Charlotte for Give Kids a Smile Mecklenburg County.

“The Women in Leadership Profile Series luncheon was a wonderful experience,” said Dr. Meg Lochary of Pediatric Dentistry of Matthews and Give Kids a Smile Mecklenburg County. “I enjoyed listening to the keynote speaker, the Honorable Elaine Marshall, and meeting other women who serve in leadership roles in our community.  I thank Delta Dental for the opportunity to attend this fun event!”

“What a terrific opportunity to meet several members of your team, reconnect with Curtis and network with other community leaders!” said Fern Ingber, CEO of America’s ToothFairy.
