2/10/2016

Charlotte, NC (February 5, 2016) – Junior League of Charlotte received a $1,000 Smiles for Kids grant from the Delta Dental Foundation that will provide free dental care through Give Kids a Smile Mecklenburg County (GKAS) for children with no insurance and no means to obtain dental care. This year’s event will serve 102 children.

GKAS is a partnership among the Junior League of Charlotte, Communities in Schools of Charlotte, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and the Charlotte Dental Society. The Program serves children in the community without insurance living in economically depressed neighborhoods, and this year’s focus is on children who’ve recently emigrated from Central America.

JLC President Lisa L. Johnson said, “The JLC is proud to continue our 90 year tradition of serving the Charlotte community, and our involvement in Give Kids a Smile Day is yet another example of how the JLC seeks to improve children’s health. The JLC is grateful to the Delta Dental Foundation for this grant. We also appreciate Dr. Meg Lochary from Pediatric Dentistry of Matthews, who has been instrumental over the years in partnering with us to help secure this grant.”

The Delta Dental Foundation focuses on providing underserved children and adults in North Carolina receive oral health education and dental care. The Junior League grant is one of 17 grants totaling $40,000 awarded to North Carolina nonprofits providing oral health programs. Grant recipients were selected based on criteria that included the number of at-risk children served, the uniqueness of the program, the level of community involvement in the program and the ability to measure results.

“We are proud to support for a fourth year the work being done by the Junior League and Give Kids a Smile for underserved children in Mecklenburg County,” DDNC CEO Curtis Ladig said. “By increasing access to dental care through our Smiles for Kids program, we can help improve the oral and overall health of children in our community by preventing serious health issues in the future.”
