Kannapolis, NC (March 8, 2016) –Cabarrus Health Alliance (CHA) received a $1,000 Smiles for Kids grant from the Delta Dental Foundation that will help them fund high-quality, comprehensive dental services for approximately 20 uninsured or underinsured students.
CHA utilizes portable dental chairs and equipment to provide access to care at school locations. This portable dental clinic has become the dental home for high-needs students who may otherwise not receive care.
“Children face many new challenges at school each year, however pain from tooth decay should not be a hindrance to their learning,” said Janie Woodie, Dental Director of Cabarrus Health Alliance. “The partnership with the Delta Dental Foundation helps to provide dental care on-site at schools, which reduces time away from the classroom for students and time away from work for parents. Transportation barriers for access to care are eliminated with this model.  We thank the foundation for its support of the children of Cabarrus County.”
The Delta Dental Foundation focuses on ensuring that children and adults in North Carolina receive high-quality oral health education and dental care. The Cabarrus Health Alliance grant is one of 17 grants totaling $40,000 awarded to North Carolina nonprofits providing oral health programs. Grant recipients were selected based on criteria that included the number of at-risk children served, the uniqueness of the program, the level of community involvement in the program and the ability to measure results.
“Tooth decay is the most common, chronic childhood disease in the U.S. Children miss 51 million hours of school every year because of oral health-related issues,” Delta Dental of North Carolina CEO Curtis Ladig said. “The most recent data tells us that 11.5 percent of children in kindergarten and fifth grade in Cabarrus County have untreated tooth decay. By increasing access to dental screenings and care, we can help improve the oral and overall health and well-being of children by preventing serious health issues down the road.”
